George S. Counts papers, 1907-1974.

The George S. Counts Papers consist of letters to Counts, manuscripts, articles by Counts and other authors, awards Counts received, classroom material, and material relating to organizations in which Counts was active. The collection also includes Russian memorabilia Counts collected during his three trips to the Soviet Union: a diary from his 1929 auto tour, postcards of Russian paintings, Russian newspapers, and Russian printed matter.

George Sylvester Counts was born on December 9, 1889. His BA from Baker University (1911) in classical studies included the study of history, philosophy, and the natural sciences. He taught for two years in two high schools in Kansas and in 1913 went to the University of Chicago (1913-1916) where he was awarded a Ph. D. magna cum laude, in education and social sciences.
